Stanley Kubrick Movie Posters

The goal of this project was to illustrate 3 alternative movie posters all linked through American movie director, Stanley Kubrick while taking into consideration the genre of the film, the style of the film, and the decade that it reflects. As a set, all three are visually linked by color palette, stylistic choice, and layout.

In this series, I strived to convey the emotions you feel in resemblance to how Stanley Kubrick wants the viewer to feel throughout the movies; something strong and almost overwhelming with a little sense of irony to the piece. The utilization of color choice and symbol selection allowed this to be a successful poster series.
A Clockwork Orange
1971 ‧ Drama/Crime
Throughout the movie, cool and warm tones clash in terms of the internal conflict of the main character. Choosing warm tones to dominate in this illustration showcases the overpowering feeling that the main character faces. Utilizing key symbols like a slice of an orange and the clock gear allows the viewer to be interested in this form of collector’s posters. The repetitions allow the poster to keep its structure in contrast to the setting of the movie.
Full Metal Jacket
1987 ‧ War/Drama
While this movie had a very intense and dark topic, keeping the color choice similar to the other posters was something to still consider while also distinguishing that the movie takes place in a different period and overall location. Utilizing symbols that represent gorilla warfare and colors that play into the overall creative direction of the film helped connect all 3 overall concepts.
Dr. Strangelove
1964 ‧ War/Comedy
When it came to Dr. Strangelove things that were considered were the period, the underlying topic at hand, and the overall genre. While it was described and viewed as a war movie, I played more into the comedy and wit the dialog carries. Utilizing bright, bold, playful colors fits the concept while also contrasting the symbols of the peace violet and the mushroom cloud.
